Death of a Spouse Policy

As an older fellowship around the world, something that was once discussed in theory is now a reality. We have faithful pastors and pastor’s wives, our friends and co-labourers who have now gone before us into the presence of our Saviour and their reward.

It should be noted that ALL pastors are strongly advised to take out a whole life insurance policy. A policy that will provide substantial care for their wives and children should they pass into eternity first.

A number of years ago, at a leadership meeting in Phoenix the following was agreed upon should a Pastors wife pass away:

  1. If the Pastor wants to remain as the Pastor of his church, then everything will be done to support that decision. This has been done already in a number of churches around the world and works. Understandably however some pastors may feel after a while they cannot continue and will return home. In some rare cases a pastor may want to stay but his headship deems him after a period of time unable to handle the pressures of ministry alone and for his own well-being would advise a return to his mother church. This decision should also be honoured by all.

  2. A Pastor must wait at least 12 months after the passing of his wife before he considers dating.

  3. He can remain as the Pastor of his church if he dates a woman outside of his own congregation. If he chooses to date a woman from within his own congregation, he must step down from the ministry of that church first.

    1. It’s not a level playing field: Ladies will be attracted to the office/idea of being the Pastor’s wife - so will hide true character.

    2. Any flaws known by the congregation will cause them to doubt the Pastor’s judgement.

    3. The potential emotional upheaval of envy, anger and suspicion among congregants. The relationship cannot be separated from the position.

May God bless our fellowship.
